Poop
Having spent a number of months in 2005 researching video art and remix culture, deconstructionism I was sad to discover that apart from boom in the 80s (along with early hip-hop), there never has been a video equivalent of the mash-up. You won’t find people making scratch vids and having their website closed down because unlike the record industry, the TV/film industry doesn’t see remix as a commercial risk. And to a large extent because it is ‘allowed’ there is far less inceptive for media artists, especially when there are a number of professional outlets for good video editors.
In May 2007 I discovered Youtube Poop. A weird new genre of remix video that I found extremely appealing because it addressed the contrivance of ‘mash-up’ videos. For a long time it has deeply annoyed my that a number of website have offered the ability to ‘mash-up’ videos; by offering a handful clips and an ajax timeline they seem to think they are somehow engaging with an underground alt art community!
Well this was the real thing. A handful of angry teenagers who weren’t at all interested in underground remix culture or deconstructionism or any of that stuff. The way they saw, you just fired up some editing software and made something quick and mindless in the same way as you would draw a massive cock on MS Paint. Others joined in and with the same mentality of an XBox gamer tried as many combinations to the uncrackable code, all trying to make things, faster, nastier, stupider, cleverer, dumber, louder or just wrong - and none them really knowing what Poop really means!
From May 2007 - May 2008 I made around 50 such videos myself, as well as curating an online gallery/directory site (youtubepoop.com) and running a ridiculously unruly forum at youchewpoop.com (the latter of which I finally handed over to group of Star Wars prequel fans) and hence forth had nothing to do with.
The following is a near complete playlist of the Youtube Poop that I made over the course the year. Some exist as self contained whilst others were made as part of Poop Tennis games, I two player surrealist game I devised, loosely based on the rules of photoshop tennis.
